WHAT CRITERIA ARE USED FOR SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENTS?
Learn even more about this topic with the Encyclopedia of Personal Finance™

Criteria for responsible investing depend on the ethical priorities of the investor or of the company that issues the investment. Some criteria are based on religious beliefs, and others are based on perceived social, economic, or environmental benefits. Some investors simply avoid companies whose products they deem harmful. Some even avoid companies that provide materials or services that are incorporated into other products. For instance, one may choose not to invest in a printing company that prints sexually explicit materials.

Investors scrutinize the following products, practices, and investment opportunities:

? Foods, including alcohol and the restaurant industry

? Military products

? Products that can be used to kill

? Drugs, including tobacco

? Gambling and gambling-oriented businesses

? The content of entertainment and the arts

? Advertising, marketing, and distribution

? Relations with labor and employees

? Relations with certain segments of the population

? Investments in other nations

? Housing

? Political actions, donations, and investment practices

? Working conditions (including safety practices, benefits, etc.)

? Power sources

? The use and treatment of animals

The above are the most commonly studied, although there are others. Investors may also study a company's mission statement to understand its goals for the consumer, the marketplace, and the investor. Finding a socially responsible investment requires clarifying one's views on how to best serve the world and the bottom line together. It may also require studying a company or a product thoroughly.

On the next screen, you will read a list of many investments that people avoid due to their ethical concerns.
